Under Scorched Earth

By investigating the properties of wild clay and volcanic stone foraged from various sites across Sicily, Under Scorched Earth examines the territorial dynamics between soil depletion, tourism and land management.

The project looks into raw clay as a lens to uncover the socio-political forces shaping the local economy and geographical landscape. This investigation results in a compilation of clay and glaze experiments, reflecting on the raw materials and vulnerable local industries essential to the Sicilian economy.
The collection features a bookshelf, alongside a series of tiles and modular elements. By layering different colours of clays excavated from various locations, the body of work highlights the raw resources that define the Sicilian landscape.

Together, these elements seek to uncover the complex layers of historical and territorial dynamics at play amidst the shifting climates affecting the landscape and local economy.
